News broke Wednesday evening that the San Francisco 49ers were going to promote Geep Chryst into the offensive coordinator position, and some players are apparently not happy. Jason Cole is reporting that he spoke with three 49ers players, including two on offense, and they were not pleased with the promotions.
According to Cole, the three players view this as a sign that management is going cheap with the coaching staff. It is worth noting Cole reported earlier this week that there was a perception of cheapness. Cole will not reveal which players he spoke to, so we are left wondering whether they are starters, reserves, potential free agents or what exactly. I tweeted Jason if they were starters or reserves, but he said he would not narrow the field.
There are a couple things to take from this. The first is that we don't know the specifics on what questions he asked the players. We don't know if he asked them leading questions, or if they went out of their way to say they viewed ownership is cheap. This is something that will get video views, so it is entirely possible this is being blown out of proportion.
That being said, it would not be shocking if players were displeased with the change in the coaching staff. Earlier today, I mentioned the issues of perception. This only adds fuel to the fire, even if we don't know the context of the players involved.
