The San Francisco 49ers have an extensive list of candidates they have interviewed, submitted requests to interview, or have simply been connected to in some form or fashion. This applies to the other teams looking for a new head coach, and so names are mixed and matched every which way.
One name that has not been mentioned much outside of the 49ers position is Vic Fangio. The 49ers defensive coordinator has interviewed for the 49ers job, and Washington requested permission (and was denied) to interview Fangio for their vacant defensive coordinator position. Other than that, Fangio has not been connected to any other jobs.
During this same stretch, offensive coordinator Greg Roman has been connected to a pair of offensive coordinator jobs, and also the Buffalo Bills head coaching job. Roman joins most of the other names out there getting multiple interviews around the league.
Over the last few days, I've seen several people ask in the comments if we should be concerned that Fangio is not getting interview requests. It is hard to figure that one out. Usually interview requests leak out, so it is not entirely crazy to assume the 49ers have not gotten many such requests. The question then is what to make of that.
It is possible the 49ers have made it known that he is their lead candidate and teams do not want to waste their time. It is also possible that in spite of Fangio's success as the 49ers defensive coordinator, his demeanor is not what owners are looking for in a head coach. He is brutally honest, and it is possible some people just don't want to deal with that. I don't know that I necessarily buy that for all the openings, but it is certainly one possible reason.
I don't know whether or not to be concerned about this because we are on the outside looking in. If there was something to be concerned about, wouldn't we hear something leak out about that? A lack of a leak does not mean there is nothing to it, but given how much information and misinformation gets out there, wouldn't you think there might be something leaked if there was some kind of issue? That lack of information is why I might be more inclined to think he is the 49ers main guy. Of course, I am sure that means I will quickly be proven wrong, but for now, that's all I have to work with. What do you think?
