We learned earlier today that the San Francisco 49ers tried out running back Pierre Thomas on Monday. It turns out they also tried out center Samson Satele on Monday, according to Pro Football Talk. The 49ers have not signed either player as of yet.
The decision to work out a center is certainly an intriguing one. Marcus Martin has struggled tremendously this season. Daniel Kilgore is eligible to return to practice, but there is no word yet on when the team will open his practice window. The decision to bring in a center for a try out is not the best news in that regard. It does not mean Kilgore won't come back, but it is certainly notable they are bringing in a center.
Satele spent last season with the Miami Dolphins, starting all 16 games after signing in training camp. He graded out poorly overall with Pro Football Focus, but did grade fairly well in run blocking. He visited this past offseason with the Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks, but remains a free agent.
