2016 NFL Draft order: 49ers sitting at No. 9 through eight weeks

The San Francisco 49ers dropped to 2-5 this past week, and are likely fairly settled into battling for draft positioning the final nine games of the season. Their loss coupled with a couple other teams winning has moved them from No. 12 to No. 9 in the 2016 NFL Draft order. Bookmark this Google spreadsheet to track the draft order all season long.

The 49ers draft positioning is handicapped by their schedule to a certain extent. The more games they lose, the higher they climb, but they face a problem in tiebreakers. The tiebreaker for draft order is strength of schedule. If two teams are tied in record, the team with the worse strength of schedule gets the better pick. The logic being that the same record against worse opposition makes them a worse team.

The spreadsheet linked above broke down the 49ers schedule and how the wins and losses are shaping up for their opponents. The biggest issues for them are the 5-2 Cardinals, 6-0 Packers and 6-1 Falcons. My guess is the 4-3 Steelers end up an issue as well with Ben Roethlisberger potentially returning this weekend.

Based on all that, the team is unlikely to win many tiebreakers when the season wraps up. Plenty could change, but the good teams on the 49ers schedule are likely to remain good, winning plenty of games. Here is how the top ten picks look, with SOS on the far right.
