Golden Nuggets: 1st Quarter Over

A quarter of the NFL season is over and the Niners are 1-3. Looking at what happened in the offseason and at the schedule, most people would have said that this would be their record. Their schedule was one of the toughest in the NFL.

The offense played well in their season opener and that was it. The offensive line has been as bad as it was in the preseason. Colin Kaepernick played well the 1st 2 games, but with 2 terrible games since, there are people calling for him to be replaced by Blaine Gabbert. Carlos Hyde has been good when given a chance. He averages 4.5 yards a carry, but his workload has been limited due to blowouts and coaching.

The defense hasn't faired much better. They were torched in Pittsburgh and Arizona. Losing all those key players in the offseason obviously hurt them a lot. The Niners traded for LB Gerald Hodges on Tuesday, which probably means they are not very satisfied with Michael Wilhoite's play next to Bowman. The secondary hasn't been very good. The younger players, Dontae Johnson and Jaquiski Tartt, have played well when given the chance, but those chances have been limited.

The team has time to turn it around, but there will need to be changes in who plays. The offensive line needs an overhaul first and foremost. The coaching staff seems like they are out of ideas on how to turn things around. The schedule doesn't get any easier either. This is going to be a long season.
