Ahmad Brooks leaves team for family reasons, return TBD

The San Francisco 49ers will be without outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks at Wednesday's practice, and there is no word on exactly when he will be back at practice. Tomsula said Brooks was away for family reasons, and said "We'll keep him in our prayers." It sounds like a serious family issue, as opposed to something related to his legal case. Tomsula said he would not get into when Brooks would be back, and then said "To be honest, I'm not asking any questions."

The 49ers have been starting Brooks and Aaron Lynch at outside linebacker. Eli Harold and Corey Lemonier have been getting some work as well, but Brooks and Lynch are getting a vast bulk of the snaps. We'll find out more about Brooks's status later this week, but if he remains with his family into the weekend, we could very well see Marcus Rush added to the 53-man roster. But again, that is speculation for now while we wait for further word on Brooks.

In other practice news, Quinton Patton had a good day of work on Tuesday and felt good with the trainer. He has to go through the concussion protocol which requires him to be without symptoms at rest and after exertion. That is a process that will run through Friday and potentially into Saturday.

Vernon Davis is going to head out to the field and see if he can go. It sounds like he is making good progress, but we'll find out more with the practice participation report later this afternoon. Joe Staley and Alex Boone will get Wednesday off. Staley had someone roll up his leg, while Boone had someone roll up his ankle. Both are expected back Thursday, but the training staff wanted to give them an extra day. NaVorro Bowman will get his normal Wednesday rest day.
