The San Francisco 49ers will welcome left tackle Joe Staley back to practice on Friday. A Packers defender rolled up his leg, causing him to miss Wednesday and Thursday practices. Tomsula had said on Wednesday Staley would miss that first day and hopefully be back on Thursday. On Friday, he said they decided to give him one more day of rest.
Staley has been doing all the walkthroughs, so he is certainly looped into the game plan. Someone asked if there was ever any concern Staley would not play, and Tomsula said "It never reached that point." I suppose a setback is always possible, but all indications are that Staley will play on Sunday against the Giants.
The question now is how this offensive line will stand up against the Giants. While New York has not had a particularly stout front seven, the 49ers offensive line has a way of making poor units look impressive. Football Outsiders ranks the Giants 31st in adjusted sack rate, and 19th in adjusted line yards. If the 49ers offense is going to find some success anytime soon, this is a great opportunity for them. Of course, if the last few weeks are any indication, they might just stumble over that opportunity.
