The San Francisco 49ers started backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons and won 17-16. The win is credited to Blaine's play, defense stepping up, and an odd call by Falcons' coach Dan Quinn. The team showed fight and the young players played well.
Blaine Gabbert played very well for his 1st start as a Niner on Sunday. He moved well in the pocket, showed quick releases on his passes, and displayed his athletic ability when he needed to leave the pocket. He led the team to 17 2nd quarter points with 2 TD throws to Vernon's replacement Garrett Celek. The offensive line did not allow a sack, opened up holes for the team to rush for 133 yards and Devey was finally relieved of his duties by Andrew Tiller, which should have been done weeks ago.
The defense played extremely well. The biggest story after Gabbert's play could be the play of NaVorro Bowman. This may be the 1st game that he looked like his old self. He was all over the field making plays. The defense held Devonta Freeman to 12 yards rushing. The young secondary played well in place of all the injured starters missing. The win will give the team a good feeling heading into the bye week before they play the Seattle Seahawks the week after.
