49ers to sign running back Travaris Cadet, waive Pierre Thomas

The San Francisco 49ers are heading into their bye week, and it makes sense to get some workouts in to have options on the back-burner. Travaris Cadet is the first of those workouts. We'll see if more happen in the next day or two.

Fooch's update: The 49ers announced they have waived Pierre Thomas to make room for Travaris Cadet.

The San Francisco 49ers brought in running back Travaris Cadet for a workout on Monday, according to ESPN's Field Yates, and now they are signing him, according to Ian Rapoport. Cadet entered the league with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2012. After three seasons, he signed with the New England Patriots this past offseason. The Patriots waived him in early October.

Cadet is a potential option in the passing game and in the return game. In 3+ seasons in the NFL, Cadet has 11 rushing attempts. On the other hand, he has 46 receptions on 64 targets, and 51 kick returns (two punt returns). He is not a guy who runs the ball or handles punt returns.

The 49ers running game is dealing with injury issues. Carlos Hyde is trying to work back from a stress fracture, while Mike Davis is on the short term injured reserve list with a hand fracture. They brought in Shaun Draughn and Pierre Thomas to join Kendall Gaskins. Draughn got the start, with Gaskins in a power role, while Thomas got limited work. The 49ers have some time to figure out their running back plan for Week 11 against the Seahawks. It is unclear who would be waived in his place, although I could see it potentially being Thomas given his limited work last week.
