Garrett Celek injures ankle, taken to 49ers locker room

New, comments

Fooch's update: Celek has been ruled out for the rest of the game.

The San Francisco 49ers suffered an early injury on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, as tight end Garrett Celek went down with an ankle injury. His ankle rolled, and the training staff took him back to the locker room. He is questionable to return. Celek dealt with an ankle injury last season that cost him the end of the season

Celek's injury could mean more playing time for rookie tight end Blake Bell. He has had inconsistent time, but the 49ers use enough multiple-tight end sets that there will be some opportunities. Vance McDonald will likely see the most looks in the passing game. McDonald had four catches for 65 yards in Week 11, while Celek had two receptions for 35 yards.

The 49ers passing game got off to a decent start against Arizona, but has slowed down. Blaine Gabbert threw an interception late in the first quarter, on a pass underthrown to Quinton Patton. The 49ers trail 3-0 as of this publishing.
