The San Francisco 49ers made a trade Monday afternoon, dealing Vernon Davis to the Denver Broncos for picks. The move was not a surprise, and it was nice to see the 49ers get some kind of return for the soon-to-be free agent. The deal involved the 49ers sending Davis plus their 2016 seventh round pick to the Broncos for their 2016 and 2017 sixth round picks. The report had been a 2017 seventh, but Maiocco is reporting it as a sixth.
It is actually kind of interesting that it worked out this way. The 49ers actually already dealt their seventh round pick earlier this year. They sent a conditional seventh to the Baltimore Ravens for Nick Easton at the end of training camp. They then traded Easton to the Minnesota Vikings for linebacker Gerald Hodges.
It turns out, the conditions were never met to send the seventh to the Ravens. Matt Maiocco confirmed that Easton needed to be active for one more game with the 49ers before they would deal the pick. By trading him when they did, the 49ers avoided that, and in turn did not have to turn over the pick. That gave them the asset they needed for the Vernon Davis deal.
With that deal done, here is where the 49ers stand for the 2016. This includes compensatory picks, of which the 49ers are expected to have four, according to Over The Cap. For those wondering, the 49ers currently hold three additional picks in the 2017 NFL Draft as well. They have Washington's fifth round pick for the Derek Carrier trade, Denver's sixth round pick for the Vernon Davis trade, and a conditional seventh round pick from the Cleveland Browns for the Andy Lee trade. That can also become a sixth round pick.
