The San Francisco 49ers are expected to sign cornerback Chris Davis to their practice squad, according to Adam Caplan. He reported earlier in the day that the 49ers brought him in for a workout on Monday.
Davis originally signed with the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Auburn. He did some work as a cornerback and kick returner, but was released late in training camp. He stands 5'10, and weighed 202 pounds at the NFL Combine. Here is a scouting report, courtesy of NFL.com.
The 49ers practice squad is currently up to its ten-person limit, so adding Davis would require a player be removed from the squad. It is possible this could mean a promotion is in order, or it could just mean the team wants to make some adjustments to the talent they have developing with the group.
This past Sunday, Keith Reaser injured his ankle and Kenneth Acker took a shot to the ribs. Jim Tomsula said they both seemed OK, but this kind of addition could be to cover themselves in case the injuries are a bigger issue. Tomsula meets with the media again Wednesday morning, at which point we will probably hear more about the state of the roster.
