Golden Nuggets: Kap Takes A Seat

The day before Colin Kaepernick's 28th birthday, news broke that Colin would be benched for Sunday's game at Levi's Stadium against the Atlanta Falcons. In his place, backup Blaine Gabbert will try to revive his career as well as the lowest scoring offense in the NFL. Changes were inevitable with the poor team performances as well as news of locker room arguments.

Kap had not played well for the last 2 season after a couple of successful seasons. He lost Jim Harbaugh, Michael Crabtree, Mike Iupati, Frank Gore and Anthony Davis this offseason. With the loss of 2 starting linemen, Kap was getting battered on every snap this season. The right side of the line featuring Jordan Devey and Erik Pears provided no protection for Kap. He has been sacked 28 times this season, tying him for 2nd most in the league.

Now Blaine Gabbert will be taking snaps behind that offensive line. Maybe the players get rejuvenated with the change and play well this Sunday. But more likely, we will see that the team is seriously flawed and the blame should not fall all on Colin. Will Kap regain his starting spot after a game or 2? It's possible, but it doesn't seem to make sense for him to be reinserted in a lost season.
