49ers media availability does not include quarterback

The San Francisco 49ers released their Week 9 media availability, and it is not entirely surprising that there is not a quarterback session scheduled yet. Normally, each game week includes Colin Kaepernick speaking on Wednesday after Jim Tomsula. This week, Tomsula and special teams coach Thomas McGaughey are scheduled to speak on Wednesday, and that is it.

Tomsula will meet with the media at 10:30 a.m., and the expectation is he will formally announce the quarterback change at that point. We might hear from one or both of the quarterbacks after that, but for now, nothing is set. I imagine the 49ers did not want to use the release of their media availability to make the move formally official. Not having a quarterback makes it patently obvious, but I suppose they are just going wait on this.

In the meantime, the team has begun preparations for the Atlanta Falcons, and returns to the practice field on Wednesday. Blaine Gabbert will handle first team snaps as he looks to get ready for a Falcons defense that Football Outsiders ranks No. 21 against the pass and No. 15 against the run. I suppose aside from the Gabbert announcement, it would be nice if Tomsula also provided some insight into the running back depth chart.
