Shaun Draughn the definition of a workhorse in 49ers Week 12 loss

New, comments

The San Francisco 49ers gave Shaun Draughn a whole lot of work, as he was the first NFL running back this season to play every offensive snap in a game. We break down that, along with Blake Bell's expanded work in Week 12.

The San Francisco 49ers offense put together a couple solid drives on Sunday, but could only get into the end zone once, and came up short in a 19-13 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. There are no major surprises in the snap count, but a few things are worth a note.

Shaun Draughn played all 56 offensive snaps, and he is the first running back in the entire NFL this season to play every single offensive snap in a game. Kendall Gaskins got special teams work, while Travaris Cadet was active but a DNP. Draughn is not a great running back, but given the 49ers injury issues, he is a decent option. He is averaging 3.5 yards per carry, which is not particularly great. Of course, given that most of us are comfortable playing for improved draft position, that makes plenty of sense.

Bruce Ellington got one snap, and his lack of playing time continues to be annoying. He is a potential playmaker that is not getting a chance to get the ball in his hands. I suppose he could be struggling in practice, or not fully grasp the playbook, but given that the offensive coaching staff can be tough to figure out, who really knows why he is not getting any additional work.

Blake Bell got extra work due to Garrett Celek's injury. Bell's 19 snaps was his second highest total of the season. In Week 3, he had 21 snaps, and in Week 2, he had 18 snaps. Vance McDonald was injured those two games, and the 49ers were going with more two tight end sets than we are seeing now. Celek suffered an ankle injury that is being described as a high ankle sprain. Odds are good he misses a game or two, which means more work for Bell.
