Fooch's update: Carlos Hyde has been placed on injured reserve.
The San Francisco 49ers have promoted tight end Brian Leonhardt, according to Matt Barrows. The team has not announced the move, and the corresponding release, but that should come along shortly.
The promotion was widely expected all week long due to injuries at the tight end position. Garrett Celek was placed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain, and Vance McDonald suffered a concussion last week against the Chicago Bears. McDonald was unable to return to practice this week from the concussion protocol, and so he is not playing on Sunday. That left the team with Blake Bell as the only healthy regular tight end.
Long snapper Kyle Nelson plays some tight end in the preseason, and they have some offensive linemen and defensive linemen who could handle the occasional snap. However, the 49ers use enough multi-tight end sets that it made sense to promote another tight end. The 49ers had Leonhardt and Jamie Childers on the practice squad. Leonhardt has experience with tight ends coach Tony Sparano, and was on the roster longer than Childers, so this is no surprise.
