The 49ers have secured their 1st losing season since 2010. Just like that year, the team is led by a head coach who was promoted from being a position coach. The organization will have to figure out how they want to handle the coaching situation. After the Chicago victory, reports surfaced that Jim Tomsula would likely be back next season. After the poor showing in Cleveland, it seems that maybe the coaching staff isn't safe after all.
The team has issues at many different positions. The offensive line has been the main weak spot all season long. Now with Alex Boone out the rest of the year and maybe gone from the team after the season, the team will have some work to do to reload on the offensive line. Anthony Davis could possibly be back from his retirement, but the team will have to address this issue in the draft. They haven't been able to run block or pass protect on a consistent basis.
As far as the quarterback situation, Blaine Gabbert has done enough to warrant coming back and competing in training camp. But, he hasn't done enough to guarantee a starting spot. The Niners will likely draft a quarterback high in the draft to provide competition next season. If the rookie doesn't beat out Blaine for the starting spot, he will likely be groomed to take over in the following seasons. Blaine has exceeded most expectations for him, but the Niners are still not producing enough on offense.
