49ers-Lions odds: Detroit opens as sizable home favorites

It is not surprising the spread is as big as it is, but can you justify picking either team in this one?

The San Francisco 49ers are going to be underdogs for at least one more game before the season ends. The 49ers travel to face the Detroit Lions in Week 16, and then host the St. Louis Rams in Week 17. They might end up favored in that season finale, but they will be underdogs this coming weekend against the Lions.

Most sportsbooks will wait for Monday Night Football to wrap up, but several have installed a Monday morning line. The Westgate installed the Lions as an 8.5-point favorite. If you look through some online sportsbooks, you can see 7.5-points.

The Lions still have to face the Saints on Monday Night Football, but I don't think that game changes the line too dramatically. The only way I see a big change is a big win or big loss for the Lions, and maybe even a notable injury. Barring something like that, I think we see this line settled at 8.5- or 9-points the rest of the week.

The question now of course is whether you lay the points with Detroit. The 49ers have been pretty awful on the road, but do have a win over the Chicago Bears, and a close loss to the New York Giants. The Lions stumbled out of the gates, losing their first five, and seven of their first eight. They followed that with three straight wins over Green Bay, Oakland, and Philadelphia, but followed that with back-to-back losses to Green Bay and St. Louis.

I have zero idea what to expect from the Lions. They could crush the 49ers, or the 49ers could keep this close and maybe swing an upset. I can't suggest either with anything close to absolute certainty. I would lean towards the Lions covering, but this feels a little like the Bears game for some reason.
