Week 16 NFL picks: Can the 49ers improve on their road woes?

We're back with Week 16 NFL picks for our Yahoo! pick 'em contest. I've also included my pick against the spread for Thursday Night Football.

Welcome back for another round of picks! Week 15 marks penultimate week of the 2015 NFL season. It means we get one last week of regular season Saturday football. Washington travels to face the Philadelphia Eagles, with kickoff scheduled for 5:25 p.m. PT on NFL Network. Washington can clinch the NFC East with a win. That follows tonight's Thursday Night Football matchup between the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers.

I'll be posting my full picks against the spread on Saturday, but for today, I have posted my straight up picks down below, as well as my ATS pick for TNF. You can view the NN pick 'em contest results over here. I was 10-6 in Week 13, which brings me to 136-90 for the season.

The San Francisco 49ers travel to face the Detroit Lions on Sunday. The 49ers opened as 8.5-point underdogs, but the line has climbed as high as ten, according to some sportsbooks. I am not overly enthused by a double-digit spread, but anything under ten is very tempting. The 49ers have struggled on the road, and things seem to be going further south in a hurry. There is the possibility that we see something like the Bears game, where both teams were bad, and the 49ers just managed to be less bad late. However, I am still inclined to think the Lions put a thumping on the 49ers this weekend.

The Oakland Raiders host the San Diego Chargers on Thursday Night Football. The Raiders opened as a six-point favorite, but a lot of sportsbooks have moved the number down to five. My guess is people saw the Chargers thump the Dolphins last week, and have decide the Chargers were a good play at six points. I'm inclined to take the Raiders, however. Both teams are playing out the string, but I think San Diego might be a little less "up" for this game. They put a lot into last week's game, and with it potentially being the last game San Diego ever plays at home (pending a potential move to LA), I would not be surprised if they came out flat in Oakland. It is still a rivalry game, but I just think Oakland comes out in better form.
