Golden Nuggets: Will 49ers play Jarryd Hayne vs. the Lions?

Sunday, December 27th, 2015 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of San Francisco 49ers links from around the Internet.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Good morning folks. Today, the San Francisco 49ers will play the Detroit Lions and truthfully, I just hope Jarryd Hayne gets some touches. No, I'm not subscribing to any kind of rhetoric about Hayne being the greatest player alive, or even someone who deserves to start and get every carry.

But ... Kendall Gaskins is set to start today's game against the Lions. Before him, it was Shaun Draughn, and admittedly, Draughn did surprise me with his strong play. Draughn is out for the game, and DuJuan Harris is the primary backup for Gaskins, as far as I can tell.

These are not players who should automatically take priority over anybody with as much potential and promise as someone like Hayne. The 49ers have two games left, Hayne will remain under their control if he stays on the roster and, of course, practice squad eligibility is a factor given how few games Hayne was active in. There is no harm in playing him at this stage.

Gaskins and Harris ... may have potential. But Hayne is already a bit up there in years and the time is right now to see what he can offer. Let's see if he touches the ball.
