Fooch's update: You can watch the Schefter comments here. Here's what he had to say:
The 49ers, I think, have checked out Johnny Manziel from afar. Colin Kaepernick has been banished, essentially, from that organization. Nobody expects him back. They have short- and long-term needs at that position. They would be a potential destination. Now, again, you're just speaking to people, and we're adding 1 and 1, equals 2, but those are the three spots that make the most sense after this season.
ESPN's Adam Schefter made an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show today to discuss the future of Johnny Manziel. SI's Andrew Perloff is tweeting out some quotations from the show, and he dropped a particularly interesting one suggesting the 49ers were one of a few teams that have taken a look at the Browns wayward quarterback.
.@AdamSchefter says Rams, 'Boys, 49ers have looked hard at Manziel at some point. And Chip Kelly. "Somebody's gonna roll the dice on him."— Andrew Perloff (@andrewperloff) December 3, 2015
The 49ers quarterback future is unsettled, with Colin Kaepernick likely released or traded after this season. Blaine Gabbert is signed through next season, and has shown some notable signs of life after being historically bad in Jacksonville. Beyond that, the team has rookie Dylan Thompson, recently activated from the practice squad, and McLeod Bethel-Thompson, currently on the practice squad.
I don't even know where to begin with this rumor. Even if the 49ers think Blaine Gabbert is an option for 2016, they still need competition for him, and a long-term plan in mind. I think Gabbert can be a transition option, but I'm still not sure if he is a guy you plan around for the next five years. Of course, I don't see how Manziel is that kind of quarterback right now given all his off-field issues, let alone his inconsistency on the field. But it at least makes for an interesting story.
