The San Francisco 49ers will release their first practice participation report Wednesday afternoon, but head coach Jim Tomsula provided some details on who will not be attending the first on-field practice of the week. According to Tomsula, Shaun Draughn, Marcus Martin, Quinton Dial, and Michael Wilhoite will be sitting out the first practice. He also said Joe Staley is sick, but attending meetings, and Jaquiski Tartt will be limited due to his knee injury.
Dial has a couple more days to get back on the practice field, so we'll wait and see what happens the next two days of practice. The bigger questions will be what happens with Draughn and Martin. Draughn suffered a sprained knee, and has missed one game due to the injury. If he does not play Sunday, Jarryd Hayne, DuJuan Harris and Kendall Gaskins would split the workload. Hayne got the bulk of the work, but Harris mentioned he was still getting up to speed on protection schemes and the playbook. My guess is Harris ends up closer to Hayne in snaps in the season finale.
Martin remains in the concussion protocol. He sat out all three practices last week, which would indicate he has not cleared the early stages of the protocol. My guess is he does not play, but we'll see what Thursday and Friday practice bring. If he does not play, we will once again likely see Erik Pears at right guard and Trenton Brown at right tackle.
