Jim Tomsula's staff is finally complete. The Niners hired the final man for the coaching staff. They hired a WR coach in Adam Henry from LSU. The final totals include 9 offensive, 8 defensive, and 2 special teams coaches. This is the staff tasked with moving the Niners back into title contention after a terrible 1st season at Levi's Stadium. There was no splash hire for the coaching staff.
The offensive staff shrunk in size from 12 to 9 coaches. Geep Chryst was held over from Harbaugh's staff and promoted to offensive coordinator. The offense looks like they will go back to a heavy run based game. They should use their offensive line's strength and that is being physical. The team tried to become more of a passing team this past season, but that doesn't really fit their identity. They are built to bully defenses into submission. Hard running backs like Gore and Hyde are successful running between the tackles. This offensive game plan will help the defense.
The defense lost a great coach when Vic Fangio left. The job he did last season was nothing short of incredible. The Niners now head into this season with Eric Mangini as their defensive coordinator. The good news? He coached under Bill Belichick. Hopefully he learned a bit from that to keep this defensive unit performing at its peak. He will have 2 of the best defensive players back this season in Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman. That should make it easier for him. The defense doesn't look to be starting off on a bad foot this year compared to last year.
