49ers coaching staff: Jim Tomsula's defensive assistants rounding into form

New, comments

The San Francisco 49ers defensive coaching staff is filling up. How would you rate it at this point?

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The NFL media was focused on the Super Bowl this past weekend, but Saturday saw some coaching news for the San Francisco 49ers. The team reportedly added three different defensive assistants over the weekend, moving the defensive coaching staff closer to completion. According to reports linked below, the team is reportedly adding Tim Lewis as defensive backs coach, Scott Brown as defensive line coach and Clancy Pendergast as inside linebackers coach.

The 49ers are likely to add some more defensive assistants, but the big positions seem to be filled at this point. Eric Mangini is set to be the defensive coordinator, but we've already heard word that Jason Tarver will have some say in the game-planning. One question to answer is how much of the defense will be influenced by Jim Tomsula's vision, how much is Eric Mangini's vision, and how much is Trent Baalke's vision. These are questions we will never get perfect answers for, but it is something to keep in mind.

Here is how the defensive coaching staff tentatively looks following the weekend. With that in mind, I have attached a poll to get your thoughts on the defensive staff. Last week, I posted a poll for the offensive staff. The results were fairly split between 1 and 6. 7 through 10 got votes as well, but 1 through 6 had the biggest split. Vote in the poll below strictly on the defensive coaching staff.
