Considering 49ers draft visits over the years

New, comments

The San Francisco 49ers have visited with a lot of draft prospects over the years. We look at how many of their eventual draft picks they visited with over the last few years.

Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers and the rest of the NFL sent scouts and coaches to Indianapolis this past week to assess the numerous draft prospects on hand for the NFL Combine. While fans enjoy the 40, wide receiver gauntlet, quarterback throwing and so much more, the most valuable tool for teams might be the interview process. Teams are allowed to interview up to 60 players during the week of the Combine. Although players have improved in preparation for these interviews, it at least provides teams with a chance to learn a little more about the players.

The Combine interviews are just one way teams can meet players. Teams will meet with players at the January All Star games, during on-campus workouts (group and individual) in March, and in hosted visits. The 49ers are going to host numerous more players than they will actually draft, but it is all part of the process.

Over the weekend, I was posting news on some Combine interviews the 49ers were conducting, and some folks were asking about the 49ers history of drafting players with which they have spoken. The information does not frequently become public before the draft, but I was able to get a lot of information from the first conference call a player a did after being drafted. I have the transcripts saved in my email, so it was pretty easy to find most of them. A few players did not have transcripts, with it usually being later round picks.

The media generally asked each player what kind of contact they had with the 49ers. A few were not asked, but for the most part, they were asked. For the 2011 draft class, there were not a ton of transcripts, which might have been due to the lockout. I came across this 2011 draft visit tracker at PFT, which said Aldon Smith and Chris Culliver had some kind of contact with the 49ers. It did not have specifics.

In looking through some draft trackers from previous years (20152014201320122011), and you can see that a lot of 49ers visits are not listed. I do wonder how much the 49ers will tell a prospect not to leak a visit if they are in fact particularly interested. We'll never know for certain, but it's interesting to consider. I don't think we should completely discount lists of drafted players who visited with the 49ers, but it is something that is really just a tiny piece of a big puzzle.

First up is the list of 2015 visits we have found thus far. That is followed by a list of 2011 through 2014 draft picks and whether or not they visited with the 49ers.
