Wide receivers have been a black hole for the Niners for awhile now. We thought the Raiders made a grave mistake a few drafts ago by picking Heyward-Bey before the best WR in college, Michael Crabtree. Michael took some time to develop, but he seemed to take off when Colin Kaepernick took over for Alex Smith. He became the #1 aerial threat. Vernon Davis had been the top pass catcher, but Kap seemed to trust Crabtree more. But after this last season, Michael Crabtree looks like he will walk in free agency and the 49ers will be looking to draft a wideout once again.
In this draft, one player seems to be a lock at the wideout position and that is Alabama's WR Amari Cooper. Amari was the best player on the field in every game he played in. He was a great route runner and pass catcher. Even at the combine, he was said to be the most ready player coming out of the college.
Kevin White was a good receiver coming into the combine, but coming out, he may have supplanted Amari Cooper as the best receiver. He has been drawing comparisons with Larry Fitzgerald and Roddy White, which is lofty expectations. He was described as a freak of nature. At 6'3 and a solid built with the blistering speed he showed, he could be the top WR pick in the draft. The Niners, after not trading up last year for Odell Beckham Jr., may need to take a chance and trade up for one of these 2 receivers. The Niners are still a loaded team, but they are missing a big piece of the puzzle and a good receiver is it. Boldin is still good, but he's not a #1. The team needs to take a chance on a game changing WR.
