Left guard Mike Iupati is expected to have a fairly robust market, and we already have a couple teams to keep on the radar. According to NBC's Dianna Russini, Washington and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are both interested in Iupati, with Washington's interest described as "strong".
This all follows what I thought was a rather interesting tweet from Matt Maiocco earlier Friday
Iupati has said in the past he'd like to stay, but like others, he recognizes the business end of things. The 49ers are not in salary cap hell, but they are not in a position to be giving out monster contracts to guards. There are internal options, some veteran free agents, and of course, the upcoming 2015 NFL Draft through which they can fill the left guard position.
Iupati has been fantastic as a run blocker, but his pass blocking has left something to be desired over the years. I imagine there will be some sizable offers out there, removing the decision fairly easily. And yet, even at a hometown discount, would it make sense to bring him back? My thought is even with a noticeable discount, the 49ers will want to look at significantly cheaper options, like a Brandon Thomas, Marcus Martin/Daniel Kilgore, Joe Looney, or draftable option.
