Todd McShay NFL mock draft has 49ers going with new name at wide receiver

New, comments

We have the latest mock draft from Todd McShay, which features the San Francisco 49ers once again looking at a wide receiver. It's safe to say people will come down on both sides of this pick.

ESPN's Todd McShay posted the second iteration of his 2015 NFL mock draft, and as one would expect, he has the San Francisco 49ers selecting a wide receiver. In his first mock draft, he had the 49ers selecting Michigan wide receiver Devin Funchess. In this current version, he has the 49ers selecting Ohio State wide receiver Devin Smith. Gotta stick with the rivalry! Here is what McShay said about the pick:

This is early for Smith -- he's our No. 26 overall player -- but the Niners need a receiver who can stretch the field vertically and nobody in college football did that better during the second half of the season than Smith (especially when big-armed Cardale Jones was throwing him the ball). He has excellent speed, subtle moves as a deep route runner that allow him to create separation, and his body control when tracking the deep ball is outstanding. San Francisco could also look to address its O-line or defensive front in the first round.

McShay projected six wide receivers in the first round. They included Amari Cooper (4 - Raiders), Kevin White (10- Rams), DeVante Parker (11 - Vikings), Smith to the 49ers, Dorial Green-Beckham (18 - Chiefs), and Devin Funchess (19 - Browns).

Smith seems like a highly talented receiver, but a guy who still has some development to do. And it seems to reflect in the comments here. I looked back at a few mock draft articles, and some people have suggested him in the second or even third round. There are also plenty who disagree with that suggestion. Of course, I think we can say virtually any pick will have people coming down on both sides of it.
