Good morning everyone. When I was a kid, it was the mid 90's and Jerry Rice and Steve Young were my idols, Jerry in particular. At that point in my life, I was going to be the next greatest WR in NFL history only behind Jerry. My dad (who hated Jerry and the 49ers) took me to meet him one day when he was visiting Sacramento and I couldn't even approach him. He was standing right there signing autographs for other kids and I just stood there frozen. Jerry could do no wrong, at least until I saw him in a studio as an analyst for the first time.
As it turns out, football ability does not mean one will make a good TV analyst. It is painfully obvious, at least to me, that Jerry is simply not good at it. I actually change the channel if I happen to be watching ESPN (or wherever he works now) and Jerry happens to appear in a segment. I don't know what it is, his voice, his hand motions, his analysis, It just doesn't work for me.
Not surprisingly, Jerry said something really stupid a few weeks ago in a segment on TV. He came out and admitted that he used to put stick-um on his gloves to help him catch the Football. Yeah, yeah, deplorable, cheating, yada yada. That part doesn't really matter to me because I'm positive every other player was doing it too. No, what really makes it dumb is what he said next. After the Patriots beat the Colts in the AFC championship game and everyone was just starting to obsess over deflate-gate, Jerry went on the Jim Rome show to talk about it. Yup. You all know what comes next, he called the Patriots cheaters. Sigh...
Well now that the Patriots won the Superbowl, their fans are apparently on a crusade to find anyone who ever doubted them to give them a piece of their minds. Someone dug this piece of film out of a dusty catacomb somewhere and voila, everyone now knows that the greatest wide receiver ever is a cheater and a hypocrite. This kids, is why we never admit on national TV that we cheated at football, it always comes back to bite us. To the links!
