49ers free agency rumors: Vikings express interest in Chris Culliver

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver is about to hit the open market, and it appears there is a nibble.

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

We have our first Chris Culliver rumor of the pre-free agency period. ESPN's Ben Goessling is reporting the Minnesota Vikings are in touch with Cully's representatives. There is nothing beyond that at this point, but it is the first mention I have seen of a specific team interested in the San Francisco 49ers cornerback.

The 49ers have to figure out their next step with regard to Culliver and Perrish Cox. While losing Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree and Mike Iupati all can sting in one way or another, the most important losses could be Culliver and Cox (assuming one or both departs). It will result in significant turnover in the secondary yet again. The 49ers have internal options to replace both players, as well as draft picks for young talent. However, it will be another mystery heading into camp as to how the cornerbacks will shake out. Tramaine Brock and Dontae Johnson could work out, or the team could find a big name in the draft. Either way, it will be one of the most important position competitions this summer.

And on a side note, this cracked me up (Minneapolis is one of the biggest bicycle citites in the US).
