Blaine Gabbert expected to re-sign with 49ers, per report

The San Francisco 49ers apparently will stick with the same backup QB plan in 2015 as they did in 2014. Interpret that however you want.

Fooch's update: Chris Mortensen has an update with numbers

What would a day of Sam Bradford news be without a day of Blaine Gabbert news? ESPN reporter Josina Anderson tweeted that a source told her Blaine Gabbert is "staying in San Francisco." Gabbert is an unrestricted free agent following the expiration of his 2011 rookie contract.

The 49ers entered free agency with only Colin Kaepernick under contract. Gabbert made one appearance in relief during the blowout loss to the Denver Broncos, finishing the game (and the season) 3 of 7 for 38 yards and one touchdown. He was responsible for the 49ers only fourth quarter passing touchdown in 2014. So, clearly this is an important re-signing......wait for it......

But seriously, I do actually like the idea of continuing to work with Gabbert. Jim Harbaugh is gone, but quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst moved up to offensive coordinator, and Steve Logan is an intriguing QB coach. Now, this does not in fact mean that anything of merit will come of all this. Odds are pretty good Gabbert sticks around and we don't see a whole lot of much from him. But with the changes to the coaching staff, it is something I suppose. I hope the team drafts a quarterback to try and develop along with Kap and Gabbert. It is not a great year for college QBs, so maybe a flier on day three?
