49ers to host free agent offensive lineman Erik Pears

The 49ers are looking for some interior line help. They will welcome the Bills right guard to town on Thursday.

The San Francisco 49ers hosted Reggie Bush on Wednesday afternoon, and they will next host free agent offensive lineman Erik Pears on Thursday. Pears spent the last five seasons as with the Buffalo Bills. He played right guard in 2014, and right tackle 2011 through 2013.

I did not get a chance to watch much of Pears, so I am waiting for some thoughts from Buffalo Rumblings. In the meantime, Pro Football Focus graded him out positive for three games against Kansas City, Cleveland and New England, but otherwise left him negative. Here is a look at their grades for Pears:

The 49ers saw Mike Iupati depart in free agency, signing with the Arizona Cardinals. Brandon Thomas and Joe Looney would be front-runners to start at his left guard role (or right guard if the 49ers were to move Alex Boone to the left side). The loser of the Daniel Kilgore/Marcus Martin center competition also could factor in, although I would be surprised if that happened this year.

I still think the 49ers add some young guard talent for the future due to Boone's uncertain future after this season. Pears is not a long term option, but would provide competition for that backup guard work that Looney handled last season, and Adam Snyder handled previously.
