Good morning everyone. What a crazy week this has been. I want to take a moment to talk about what I saw dubbed in the links today as "Black Monday." It was maybe the largest compilation of terrible news the 49ers have ever had crammed into one day. The news broke on the retirement of my favorite 49er of this generation, Patrick Willis. That was followed in quick succession by reports seeming to confirm the departing free agents. Mike Iupati is gone and Michael Crabtree looks all but gone. Justin Smith is more than likely going to retire and Bruce Miller seems to be caught up in domestic violence case. Oh, and there were also the Colin Kaepernick and Greg Hardy rumors. Monday sucked, but at least free agency is providing enough craziness that its hard to dwell on Monday.
Torrey Smith has been the 49ers counter move to date. Assuming we didn't spend all this money on a legitimate deep threat just to trade our QB away, Colin Kaepernick finally has a receiver perfectly suited to his arm. Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin, and Stevie Johnson are all good players, but they are far too similar for my liking. Vernon Davis is probably still faster than just about every other TE, but he was not good last season and I doubt he is going to get any better at this stage of his career. Outside of Torrey, the 49ers appear to be interested in Reggie Bush and Erik Pears. They still have some cap space, and could still get more by releasing Ahmad Brooks before June 1st. I wouldn't expect them to go after anyone too big, but they aren't done either. To the links!
