49ers free agents 2015: Stevie Johnson could have interest from Browns, while 49ers remain on radar

The San Francisco 49ers time with Stevie Johnson may not be at an end quite yet. He is checking his options, but the 49ers could remain in the picture.

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers announced Stevie Johnson's release Thursday afternoon, and he appears to already have interest. Jason LaCanfora is reporting that the Cleveland Browns "will be exploring" Stevie Johnson in hopes of adding another wide receiver. LaCanfora also said the team is exploring Dwayne Bowe.

That is certainly a random choice of descriptor by LaCanfora. Aside from sounding just a little off, it does not really provide much in the way of specifics. Are they hosting visits, are they on the phone with agents? Maybe that means the Browns are googling the players and checking out what Niners Nation and Arrowhead Pride have to say about them. Who knows.

What is a bit more interesting is we have further confirmation that the 49ers and Stevie Johnson are not necessarily done. Pro Football Talk reported the door has not been closed on Johnson returning to the 49ers. This follows Matt Maiocco's similar report a couple days ago. It sounds like Johnson will check around and see if he can do better elsewhere. If he can, so be it, and if not, maybe he comes back to the 49ers.

If he did return, my guess is it would be on a one-year deal. He dealt with some injuries in 2014, so a one-year deal might give him a chance to show what he can do over 16 games of serious playing time. Of course, with Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin out there, along with a hopefully healthy and rejuvenated Vernon Davis, there would not exactly be a lot of targets to be had for Stevie.
