The San Francisco 49ers were in attendance at the Boise State Pro Day on Wednesday, meeting with running back Jay Ajayi, according to Tony Pauline. Ajayi was the most notable prospect on display for the Smurf Turf squad. In discussing Wednesday Pro Days, Trevor Woods had this to say about Ajayi:
Boise State's Jay Ajayi doesn't receive as much love as he should because he doesn't play for a powerhouse school, but he's right up there with the top running backs in this draft class. Ajayi scored 32 total touchdowns and was the first player ever to have over 1,800 yards rushing and 500 plus receiving yards in the same year. He can be had in the fourth or fifth round and he has big time sleeper potential.
The 49ers announced the signing of Reggie Bush on Wednesday, giving them Bush, Carlos Hyde, Kendall Hunter, Kendall Gaskins and Jarryd Hayne in their running back depth chart. I imagine they add at least one more running back, but it seems unlikely to come before day three. And it is entirely possible they just add a UDFA as a camp body.
Hunter is coming off a 2014 torn ACL, which followed a 2012 torn Achilles, and Bush has dealt with durability issues throughout his career. Given that both are signed to one-year deals, they are not necessarily long-term options. Carlos Hyde is entering only his second year in the league, but I think he can emerge as a starter.
Even still, would it make sense for the 49ers to invest in another running back in the draft? They have drafted a running back each of the last six drafts. Does the streak end this year, or will it continue?
