Jarryd Hayne rumors: 49ers emerge as front-runner for rugby star, according to report

A week after reports the Detroit Lions were going to sign Jarryd Hayne, the San Francisco 49ers might have emerged as the new favorite. Conflicting reports galore!

The San Francisco 49ers have emerged as front-runners to sign Australian rugby star Jarryd Hayne, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Rugby league reporter Michael Chammas went so far as to report Hayne agreed to terms with the 49ers on Sunday (Saturday, Bay Area time). This report is in conflict with the Daily Telegraph's report a week ago that Hayne was going to sign with the Detroit Lions. The Telegraph stuck with their Lions report on Sunday.

Hayne conducted a Pro Day in December, and visited with the 49ers, Lions and Seattle Seahawks. He ran a 4.53 40, and the belief is he could work as a kick and punt returner, as well as potentially a running back. According to Chammas, "It is believed the lifestyle of San Francisco compared to Detroit was a factor in his decision." I'm not entirely sure what to make of that, but if Hayne has indeed picked the 49ers, I'd imagine he'll comment on that at some point.

The announcement is expected around 7 p.m. PT on Monday, which is 2 p.m. Sydney time. We'll keep an eye out for the official word in just a little bit. Either way, we should have an answer before the end of the evening.
