The NFL Draft is a little over a month away, and that means the rumor silly season continues to roll along. The Philadelphia Eagles have been the primary movers and shakers when it comes to crazy rumors, and I am sure Chip Kelly will not let that end anytime soon.
We now have a new entrant in the amusing NFL Draft rumor mill. The San Diego Chargers have been connected with Marcus Mariota, with a private workout scheduled for April 15. Now, the rumors have the Chargers looking to move up with a slightly high profile piece. There have been some chatter the team will look into trading quarterback Philip Rivers to the Tennessee Titans for the No. 2 overall pick.
They have just been rumblings for now, but a trade would not be entirely out of the realm of the possible. Rivers's contract expires after the coming season, and he has said he thinks he will play out his contract rather than agree to an extension in the next few months. The Chargers (or any future team) could elect to franchise Rivers after the season, assuming they could not come to terms on a long-term deal. Rivers will turn 34 at the end of the upcoming season, so he would not be looking at a huge long-term deal. He will get great money in free agency, but a team would probably not need to commit extensive years on a deal.
Mariota will be drafted somewhere before the San Francisco 49ers pick. The question becomes which team, and what that pushes further down the draft board. If the Titans stuck at No. 2, they would probably not take a quarterback. They could, but odds are good they look in another direction. If the Chargers or Eagles moved up to the No. 2 pick, that potentially moves another player down toward the 49ers at No. 15.
The 49ers could very well end up trading down from their current pick, but it will depend on what is slipping down the draft board. Mariota's presence will make for an interesting first couple hours of the draft.
