We are through the first two weeks of free agency, and most of the big names are locked up. NFL.com ranked out the top 101 free agents, and has updated their current status. The most notable is Michael Crabtree, but there are still some intriguing names on the market. Down below I have posted the top remaining free agents in order of NFL.com rankings.
The San Francisco 49ers seem to have their roster mostly set heading into the 2015 NFL Draft. They did lose Chris Borland to retirement earlier this week, so it is certainly possible the team could add a veteran linebacker. Brandon Spikes, Rolando McClain and Mason Foster are the top three options on the market.
McClain is facing a four-game fine for a substance abuse violation, and he is enough of a head case that I just don't see the 49ers signing him. Foster is the most intriguing of the group, but that also could make him a little more pricey than the 49ers would be willing to go. But, given Bowman's injury and Wilhoite's general ceiling, maybe they eventually do invest a little more in the ILB position.
The NFLPA lists the 49ers with $9.2 million in cap space, although that number likely is around $7 million once they factor in Reggie Bush's contract. I would be surprised if they made another notable free agent addition, but maybe they find a veteran minimum or two to mix in?
