After the Chris Borland retirement last week, the Niners have finally had a slower news week. No surprise retirements this week. At least I hope there is no more coming. I think the fans may be at a breaking point if we hear about another that came out of the blue.
Colin Kaepernick has been in Arizona all offseason working with Kurt Warner and a QB coach. I think it was a much better offseason plan than the last offseason, where he was in the weight room. He has all the muscles that he's going to need in life. To be a great quarterback, he's going to need other things. The 3 biggest in my opinion would be accuracy, touch, and awareness. Obviously accuracy is the single biggest asset for a quarterback. Without it, a quarterback will never be good. It also may be the hardest skill to develop. When the game is coming at a quarterback full speed, a quarterback has to slow down and lead a receiver to the ball. It is hard to slow the game down to mentally process situations.
As far as touch is concerned, we all know that Kap can throw fastballs. It takes skill and practice to take some speed off throws to get them to receivers in other positions. Deep balls don't need speed. Touch is required to lead a receiver down the field to catch a ball in stride. I think touch is the hardest for Kap to learn. Touch would lead to better accuracy. Peyton Manning doesn't have the strongest arm, but his touch is unbelievable. He throws receivers open, which is something Kap needs to learn. Kurt Warner had great touch. Not many people could be a better mentor to learn from.
Hopefully we see this new and improved thrower in Colin. He is reportedly building a good, working relationship with Bruce Ellington and Quinton Patton. Now, hopefully they are able to play to actually see what they have developed.
