Lance Briggs to visit 49ers on Monday, per report

The San Francisco 49ers will bring in a veteran inside linebacker for a look. Will they sign Briggs?

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers are continuing their look for depth at inside linebacker this week. Lance Briggs told ESPN he is visiting the 49ers on Monday. Matt Barrows previously reported the team had some discussions with Briggs. Shortly after that, Trent Baalke confirmed Briggs was on the team's radar, but never got into any details on a visit.

Baalke had also mentioned Mason Foster, but he recently signed with the Bears. The 49ers could use some depth at linebacker, but have publicly expressed excitement about some of their current options. Jim Tomsula and Trent Baalke have both given Michael Wilhoite the public vote of confidence next to NaVorro Bowman.

Tomsula also recently talked about how Nick Moody would get more opportunities. Moody has focused on special teams the first two years of his career. He got some ILB opportunities the final three weeks of this past regular season after Chris Borland got hurt. He'll be right back in the mix this summer with Shayne Skov, but he will once again face a tough roster competition. Even if the 49ers add a veteran like Briggs, odds are good they will also draft a linebacker, or at least sign a UDFA. Moody will get some chances, but odds are that he sticks with special teams for the most part.
