The team has been busy in trying to assess their options at inside linebacker. Following the retirements of Chris Borland and Patrick Willis, the team is looking for veteran help to at least provide competition in training camp, and at most potentially provide another starter. The 49ers have expressed confidence in Michael Wilhoite, but that will not stop them from boosting the depth chart.
Over the weekend, we learned that the team will host linebacker Lance Briggs on Monday. According to Matt Maiocco, the team will also host Desmond Bishop on Monday. The 49ers signed Bishop this past December to a one-year deal, following a season-ending injury to Kassim Osgood. Bishop played primarily on special teams, but got some ILB work as well.
This all comes after the team hosted Erin Henderson for a visit on Thursday, according to Matt Barrows. Henderson's agent said the linebacker met with Jim Tomsula and Trent Baalke, and had dinner with linebackers coach Clancy Pendergast. Henderson was out of the league last year following a pair of DUIs. There is no word on what kind of suspension he might face once he does sign.
The 49ers have also considered some draft options. The team met with Clemson ILB Stephone Anthony, and has a visit lined up with Mississippi State ILB Benardrick McKinney.
I have included a poll below to see what people are looking for at the ILB position. If we operate under the assumption that NaVorro Bowman will be healthy to start the season, who would you want starting next to him Week 1?
