The biggest news on Monday concerning the 49ers is the free agent visit from former rival Darnell Dockett. His visit makes sense for the Niners considering the potential retirement of Justin Smith and the dismissal of Ray McDonald. While the team has a few capable players to play on the defensive line, none of them are a sure thing. Reinforcements are needed. When healthy, Dockett is a good d-lineman. Last year, he injured his ACL that ended his season. He can still be productive. But the team will not get into a bidding war for his services. He could potential cause one.
The Niners won the race to sign Australian rugby star Jarryd Hayne. He will attempt to start his NFL career by being a running back and return man. The Niners won his signature over the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks. He gives the Niners options at running back if Frank Gore doesn't come back. The team would only be left with 2 backs with NFL experience. He worked out for teams and ran a 40 yard dash as fast as Melvin Gordon, who many say is the top back in this coming's draft.
Jarryd's biggest contribution will have to be on special teams. They figure to use him as a returner and specialist. The team's return game has never been a strength, so any potential to improve it must be taken. I hope he can provide a spark in that facet of the game. Watching rugby makes me believe he could be an asset. They seem to take a lot of punt situations in those games. Could translate to the NFL games.
