The San Francisco 49ers are using one of their official visits on a deep sleeper prospect. Aaron Wilson is reporting the team will bring in Division II defensive lineman Tory Slater. The West Georgia product will visit with the 49ers on April 9, and also has visits with the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks.
Slater took part in a Pro Day workout earlier this month, where he measured in at 6'5, 285 pounds. He had a 35-inch vertical leap, and bench pressed 225 pounds 31 times. The bench press number would have tied him for 11th among all NFL Combine participants.
Slater played wide receiver in high school, but bulked up at the next level. Last season, he recorded 10 sacks and 69 tackles, with 16.5 tackles for a loss. You can read through a brief interview he conducted with Draft Diamonds. When asked to name one NFL player to whom he would compare himself, he said Jason Pierr-Paul. He said his biggest weakness is sometimes being too passive.
There's not much in the way of scouting reports, but I did come across this video of some of his highlights at West Georgia. His size and strength is intriguing, to say the least. It will be interesting to see if his workouts get him up into the draft, or if he ends up a priority free agent that Saturday evening after the draft concludes.
