The pro day schedule for today features a likely top 20 selection, and he plays a position the 49ers need help at. We'll get to him in a second. One clue... he plays for Arizona State. Today the Sun Devils will be the epicenter for scouts and NFL teams.
Pro Days for Friday, March 6th:
" Appalachian State
" Arizona State
" Newberry
" Northern Illinois
" Southern Mississippi
Receiver Jaelen Strong of Arizona State will be the biggest name of the pro days for Friday. Strong had a great combine, posting a 4.44 forty and 42" inch vertical. NFL Network Charles Davis thinks highly of Strong, as do I. "He is definitely a riser. I said before the combine to keep an eye on him. He is off the
On the season, Strong had 82 receptions for 1,165 yards and 10 touchdowns. What I love about strong is his wide skill-set, which gives him a great chance at succeeding in the NFL. He stands 6'2" and 217 lbs, the opposite build of what drafted 49ers wideouts have been in recent years. Strong has strength, size, speed. Not every receiver has that type of build with as good of a skill-set as Strong possesses. I have gone on record this year stating he has been my favorite receiver to watch. Clutch play after play, long touchdowns leaving defenders in the dust, contested grabs, making tacklers miss, Strong can get things done. Strong will be a name that will only continue to ascend and will be right around the 49ers draft range.
For the reasons listed above, Strong is worth checking out today. He will be a name associated with the 49ers more frequently going forward. For what it's worth, out of the NFL.com writers, Daniel Jeremiah has Strong drafted by the Cleveland Browns at pick No. 19. Expect to see Strong start to appear frequently in mock drafts around that range and higher. Everyone can use a receiver like him in the now pass happy NFL. For the love of Kap, the 49ers need a top-tier receiver.
Other prospects worth noting for ASU are offensive guard Jamil Douglas and free safety Damarious Randall. Douglas will be a mid round selection and has shown a high motor in college, but needs to become more explosive. Randall posted a speedy time of 4.46 at the combine and plays fast on the field as well. Standing just 5'11" doesn't mean much when watching Randall play. He plays with a chip on his shoulder and fly's around the field making punishing tackles. Not only does Randall hit hard, ball skills are there too. He could be a riser if teams overlook his height.
