Every year, the San Francisco 49ers are connected to a given free agent, and it quickly becomes a state of furious refresh looking for new information. Nnamdi Watch is the most famous, but Dockett watch is picking up a little steam.
Defensive tackle Darnell Dockett has visited with the 49ers, reportedly taken a physical, and maybe received a contract offer. We've seen him remove Arizona Cardinals from his Twitter bio. At one point his wikipedia page had a San Francisco 49ers reference, but that has since been removed. This might not have the intensity of other watches, but it is at least our first notable one of the 2015 offseason.
Heading into yesterday afternoon, I felt pretty comfortable saying Dockett would end up returning to the Arizona Cardinals. Now, I'm leaning 49ers, but not intensely. I still think he could be trying to leverage a better deal back in Arizona. As this drags on, I'm not entirely sure what that should mean. I have to think we get an answer today, but we don't know what exactly is going on in the discussions between Dockett and the 49ers and/or Cardinals.
However this plays out, I do not view this as a strong indicator regarding Justin Smith's future with the team. It is certainly quite the coincidence that this is going on as Smith was having his discussions with Jim Tomsula regarding his future. Smith met with the head coach on Wednesday. I'd think we would hear something sometime soon, because I don't see Smith leaving the team hanging. He could very well wait into the summer since he does not really need the offseason workout program, but he does not strike me as the kind of guy who would leave the team hanging that long. But, we'll find out eventually.
