The San Francisco 49ers are looking through various wide receiver options, and we can add one more to the list. Matt Maiocco is reporting the team brought in free agent Jerome Simpson for a visit on Wednesday. That was the same day as the team's visit with Ted Ginn.
Simpson is a speedy guy who averaged 15.1 yards per catch in his last season playing in the NFL. I say "last season" because it happened to be in 2013. Simpson was suspended for three games to start the 2014 season, and the Minnesota Vikings elected to release him during that time.
Simpson had been suspended as a repeat offender of the substance abuse policy. For those that don't remember, that suspension was due to a DUI case. This was his second suspension with the first coming when he tried to have two pounds of marijuana shipped to his home. Apparently his weed guy is long distance.
Legal troubles aside, Simpson would be a reasonable roll of the dice in training camp and the preseason. I'd imagine any deal would be down near the league minimum, and it would effectively be a tryout for Simpson. If he could stay out of trouble, there is some talent there. I'd at least like to see what he could do in training camp and the preseason, and maybe the 49ers find a diamond in the rough.
