49ers reportedly believe they're losing Frank Gore, RB's trainer bashes team and more

We already know that the Philadelphia Eagles are interested in impending San Francisco 49ers free agent running back Frank Gore. According to that report, the Eagles have shown serious interest, and said interest is mutual enough to suggest that a deal could be done shortly after free agency opens on Tuesday. There's also the quote from Jed York saying that the 49ers will "figure out a way do it," regarding bringing Gore back.

There's also the most recent report from Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. He says that the 49ers "believe" they are losing out on Gore, and that they are "starting to look around themselves." So things are nice and murky.

Update: Rand Getlin of Yahoo! reports the Eagles have an offer on the table that averages $5 million per season and includes $7 million guaranteed. I sincerely doubt the 49ers offered that much in guaranteed money and it's possible Philadelphia is offering more years, as well.

One thing that sort of goes along with that, as highlighted by Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, is a quote from Brian Schwartz, Gore's trainer at Undisputed Boxing Gym in San Carlos. Schwartz wrote on his Facebook page: "It's over ... Niners horrible business. You deserve everything that's coming your way."

Now, I think there's a few important things to note here. For one: this seems like an incredibly emotional response from a guy who spends a lot of time with Gore. He's not Gore's agent and he's not Gore himself, so his words shouldn't be considered gospel but at the same time, that's a pretty interesting quote. Obviously, the 49ers have not had the smoothest offseason and haven't build a recent reputation for being a good organization to deal with (see: Gase, Adam).

There's also the fact that, even if the 49ers don't end up with Gore because they haven't made him an offer he's willing to accept ... that's fine. I desperately do not want to see Gore in another team's uniform, but at the end of the day, he has a certain value to the 49ers and teams should never cave for sentiment. The 49ers could be doing absolutely nothing wrong and that would be enough to illicit this strong response from someone emotionally invested in the situation.

Or the 49ers strutted into negotiations, slammed a contract on the table, did the DX cross taunt and demanded Gore put pen to paper.

In other news, the Eagles are not the only team interested in Gore, it seems. We've heard the Indianapolis Colts floated as a potential destination for awhile and Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reiterated that interest on Sunday. Maiocco reports that the Colts and Gore "have mutual interest in working toward a contract." I recall talk about the Colts and Gore having mutual interest as far back as the second half of the regular season.

As far as fit and need is concerned, both the Eagles and the Colts need Gore more than the 49ers do. He'd start with either team, while the 49ers want to bring Carlos Hyde to the forefront and have interest in C.J. Spiller. I could easily see Indianapolis or Philadelphia offering Gore a bigger deal than the 49ers are comfortable with.
