The San Francisco 49ers have more or less wrapped up their free agency plans, with maybe a scattered couple signings of reserves still possible. The next big date in free agency is May 12, at which point unrestricted free agents (that were not released) will no longer impact the 2016 comp pick formula.
In the meantime, the NFL Draft is less than three weeks away, and it makes sense to go back through the 49ers depth chart at each position. Some positions will not require any additions, but are likely to be considered for more depth. It might be a veteran free agent, a couple draft picks, or even some undrafted free agents, but the team will consider various options to fill out the roster.
Today we start with the quarterback position.
QB: Colin Kaepernick, Blaine Gabbert
The team signed Gabbert to a 2-year extension, and it would seem like they are settled in developing him further as their backup. That being said, the team will add some bodies, if only to take the extra reps that come during the preseason. The free agency route is pretty weak at this point. Tarvaris Jackson, Matt Flynn, Jason Campbell and Michael Vick are still out there. Other than that, there is not a whole lot of much.
That could mean we see the 49ers invest a draft pick in a quarterback, and then potentially add one or two UDFAs. The 49ers have not been linked to many quarterbacks leading up to the draft. They reportedly met with Colorado State QB Garrett Grayson during Senior Bowl week, but we don't know how extensive the meeting was. They could have been inquiring about contact information, or they could have actually had extensive discussions. But there has been nothing reported since, and that is the only quarterback mentioned in connection with the 49ers.
Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota are the top two quarterbacks, and very well could go 1-2 in the upcoming draft. Grayson, Brett Hundley and Bryce Petty have generally been mixed in the next group, but Sean Mannion has picked up some steam this offseason. That is followed by a vast assortment of quarterbacks that will go on day three and into Sunday's undrafted free agency shopping.
How do you see the rest of the quarterback depth chart shaking out? Will they go for one of those mid-round names to develop along with Gabbert, or will they stick with just some potential UDFA diamonds in the rough? Or do they wait and sign one of the remaining scrub options in free agency?
