49ers host Penn State OT Donovan Smith for pre-draft visit, according to report

The San Francisco 49ers brought in a second offensive lineman for an official visit. Would a mid-round offensive lineman make sense?

Matthew O'Haren-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly meeting with several draft prospects this week, and we can add one more to the mix. Aaron Wilson is reporting the 49ers are hosting Penn State offensive tackle Donovan Smith today. Smith joins Utah's Jeremiah Poutasi as the second offensive lineman to visit with the 49ers. The team has also been connected to Ben Beckwith, La'el Collins and Sean Hickey.

The 49ers have begun their offseason workout program with Brandon Thomas a full participant. The 49ers brought in Erik Pears to compete, and Joe Looney will get some opportunities, but the perfect situation sees Thomas emerge as the starting left guard. However, as we have discussed before, the 49ers will potentially also need to replace Alex Boone in a year.

Smith is a potential late day two pick. The 49ers need impact players, but they will also be looking for some long-term options. Smith played left tackle in college, but the common belief is that he is better suited at guard. If the 49ers decided to use a mid-round pick on him, he would find himself in a great learning experience.
