ESPN had their various NFL team writers put together projections for their respective teams. Paul Gutierrez covers the San Francisco 49ers, and he has the team going 7-9. Gutierrez has the 49ers winning their opener against the Vikings, and then dropping six straight en route to the 9-loss season.
I decided to go through the predictions provided by the 13 ESPN writers representing the 49ers opponents. I pulled out their predictions for the time(s) their team faces the 49ers. Upon review, the 49ers finish a robust 4-12. The team drops three straight to open the season, then pulls off the surprising upset of the Packers. They end up with two divisional home wins, and then a win over the Falcons. All three wins come by less than a touchdown apiece.
This does not tell us a lot, but it does provide some ideas of the impression of the 49ers around the media. It has been a tumultuous offseason, and the view among the media is less than stellar. I would be curious to know how this impression compares with executives, coaches and players on those same opposing teams. Jim Tomsula was respected as an assistant coach. We'll probably never know for certain, but it is something I ponder every so often.
